Neighbour mediation is a process in which a third party helps people resolve disputes between those who live in the same locality or neighbourhood.

It is a route that aims to assist both parties in identifying each other's needs, sorting out any problems, exploring solutions and negotiating an agreement. This often helps preserve neighbour relations, or build better ones and can sort out disputes before they escalate.

It gives both sides a chance to talk and listen to other views in a non-threatening atmosphere.

Disputes can cover a wide range of issues, including noise, anti-social behaviour, dogs, parking, boundary problems or verbal abuse.

Neighbour mediation is often the best option when:

• you need to stay on good terms because you're living near to each other
• it is in both your interests to sort things out
• the dispute is becoming a strain on both of you
• calling in the authorities or going to court may make the problem worse and cost a lot of money and heartache

Most mediation services are registered charities although some are part of other organisations, such as local authority housing departments or the local Citizens' Advice Bureau. Speak to your local authority about your nearest service.

How much will mediation cost?

Most neighbour mediation services are free of charge to the user, and is carried out by specially trained volunteers who work in pairs. They are supplied by a mediation service in the local community.
