If you suspect you are upsetting or disturbing them, then try to reduce your noise levels and go and speak to your neighbour to apologise.
In addition to this, if you are approached by a neighbour and asked to keep the noise down, then react positively and respect their right to peace and quiet in their home.
With this in mind, we have put together some suggested dos and don’t when it comes to making noise in your home: -
DO
- Warn you neighbours if you have a party and let them know when it is likely to finish
- Remember that noise and vibration transmits easily through walls and floors
- Wear slippers or go barefoot if you live in a flat or maisonette. Your floor may be someone else’s ceiling
- Have carpets and heavy curtains - they help to absorb sound
- Be aware that if you install laminate flooring this is likely to increase noise levels and disturb your neighbours
- Make your children aware that their noise can upset others
- Be aware if you live in a poorly insulated property it is likely you will have to modify your behaviour much more than if you lived in a detached house
- Be aware of the law and that you have responsibilities as well as rights
- Be a good neighbour
DON’T
- Don’t carry out noisy DIY after 7pm, or before 10am on weekends. Drilling and hammering are particularly disturbing
- Don’t play music at a level which annoys your neighbours. Keep the bass level down
- Don’t take a radio or amplified speakers outside. Use headphones if you want to listen to the radio whilst relaxing in the garden
- Don’t have loud, late night parties. Warn your neighbours and finish at a reasonable time
- Don’t use domestic appliances late at night. Think about purchasing the quieter models that are now available
- Don’t leave dogs alone for long periods. If you have to, get a friend or neighbour to check on them (see advice on barking dogs)
- Don’t shout or speak loudly, especially if you live in a poorly insulated property
- Don’t allow children to play too noisily or if you live in a flat don’t allow children to jump about on the floor in a way that disturbs neighbours below
- Don’t sound car horns, slam doors or rev engines, especially at night
- Don’t forget to oil squeaky doors or gates
